How To Make The Best Choice When You Buy Diamond Stud Earrings

Diamond stud earrings are so popular and with a good reason. They look beautiful, have a timeless style, and can be worn almost anywhere with virtually any clothes. When you look through our collection of diamond stud earrings, you see a wide range of diamond shapes, precious metals and settings

The choice might look confusing at first, but in this article, we will give you all the information you need to know to make the best choice, whether you are buying as a gift or for yourself.

Diamond Quality And Diamond Stud Earrings

The first thing to consider when buying any kind of diamond jewellery is the quality of the diamonds. You may have heard about the Four Cs of diamond quality: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat (weight). Fortunately, when choosing diamond stud earrings, there is a particular factor that works in your favour! In almost every situation, the diamonds will only be seen from relatively far away, unlike a diamond ring where people will take a good close look at it whenever they can. This means you can relax the usual considerations about colour and clarity. This factor can save you a lot of money or enable you to buy larger diamonds within your budget.

Diamond Clarity And Diamond Studs

Diamond clarity is a grading of the level of imperfection within a diamond. Diamonds with a high clarity grade will have fewer internal flaws or inclusions. Because studs are usually viewed from a distance, nobody will ever see those flaws – they just see the sparkle and size!

In addition, diamond studs are less emotionally charged than purchases such as an engagement ring, where perfection is an emotional issue. The GIA (the leading diamond grading organisation in the world) suggests that you can safely buy studs with diamonds graded from SI1 to as low as I2 for a pleasing result. Most of the diamonds used in our studs are a couple of grades higher at SI.

Diamond Color In Diamond Studs

In the same way as clarity, you can safely compromise on diamond colour when it comes to studs. The diamonds will tend to take on the colour of the hair or skin. Many buyers find that diamonds graded as low as D to Z are perfectly acceptable. Most of our diamond stud earrings are graded at G, which we see is a sweet spot in terms of value and quality.

Diamond Cut And Diamond Studs

One aspect of diamond quality that you should not compromise on is the cut of the diamonds. The quality of the cut is reflected (excuse the pun) in the degree of sparkle that a diamond has. A poorly cut diamond will not sparkle very well. Given that diamond stud earrings are usually seen at a distance, it is the sparkle that attracts attention and sets off the wearer’s look. So, make sure that the diamonds are well cut. Look for diamonds that are graded either Very Good or Excellent.

At All Diamond, all our diamonds, no matter the type of jewellery, have a high grading for cut quality so that you will have no problems.

Diamond Carat (Size) And Diamond Studs

The size of a diamond is measured in carats. As people usually want to purchase the largest diamonds that will fit their budget, there are no specific recommendations to be made here. However, there are a couple of general points to watch out for.

1)      When earrings are sold, the carat weight on the description will be for all the diamonds in both earrings. For example, suppose you see a pair of studs showing a diamond weight of 0.80CT. In that case, each stud will have a diamond, or diamonds, that weigh 0.40CT for a total diamond weight of 0.80CT.

2)      Certain diamond shapes can look larger than others. For example, a single princess-cut diamond will usually look larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight. Also, several small diamonds placed close together, often in a pave setting, can give a single larger diamond’s visual effect at a much lower cost!

Diamond Shapes And Stud Styles

The fun part of the process is (or certainly should be) the choice of the studs. The most popular diamond shapes for solitaire designs, with a single diamond on each stud, are round brilliant-cut, princess and cushion cut. Round diamonds are far and away the most popular – but you might want to consider bucking that trend!

These are the most popular diamond shapes used in diamond stud earrings:

Round diamonds are the classic diamond shape; they have a traditional look, are the most brilliant, with the most sparkle.

Princess cut diamonds have almost as much sparkle as round diamonds; they are angular, square, and modern. There are other square diamond cuts, but the princess has the most brilliance.

Cushion cut diamonds have a rounded square shape. This is a compromise between round and square shapes – a softer version of the princess cut.

Both cushion and square diamonds can look larger than the equivalent sized round cut – that’s about geometry. Still, it might be a good reason other than style to choose one of these over a round diamond.

Emerald cut diamonds can have a sophisticated look to them, but the way the diamond is cut means less sparkle and fire; they have more of a shimmering effect.

Most of our diamond studs are in the most popular round, and princess cut shapes.

Setting Types And Diamond Studs

Many settings can be used in diamond earring studs; however, we use just two. We use claw settings and rub over. The claw is the standard method for holding diamonds; it maximises the sparkle of the diamond while holding the diamond very securely. The rub-over setting envelops the lower part of the diamond in precious metal. This is the most secure type of setting for diamonds in any jewellery.

We use these two styles because they are the very best at keeping the diamonds safe and secure. The ears are dangerous for diamonds; the hair can snag on a gemstone and pull it out, or even movement can lead to a dislodged diamond. Handling or wearing a scarf or hat can lead to lost diamonds.

Precious Metals and Diamond Studs

We use three precious metals in our diamond studs, in fact just one metal, gold, but in three colours: yellow, rose and white gold. None of these metals should cause problems for people with sensitive skin due to the type of alloy (metal mixture) we use. So, the choice comes down to preference, and for many women, this is considered in relation to their skin tone. Yellow gold works well with warmer skin undertones. White gold looks great on pale skin and rose gold is relatively neutral and can work well on many different skin tones.

Earring Backs And Diamond Stud Earrings

The earring backs can not be seen when the studs are worn, but they should be considered for their comfort and security of fitting. We use push backs for most of our diamond stud earrings for their comfort and security. They are also relatively easy to put on and remove.
